ASSIGNMENT / RESPONSIBILITIES: Full-time professorial appointment with teaching duties in pharmaceutical sciences at the Bachelor, Master and Postgraduate level (6 h/week) in addition to the supervision of Master’s student research projects and PhD theses. The successful candidate will develop a high-class state-of-the art research programme recognized both nationally and internationally in the field of “Computational Pharmaceutical Chemistry - Atomistic modelling of biological systems of pharmaceutical interest” and must obtain extramural funding to support the research activities. The candidate will also have administrative, management and organizational duties within the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Science.
The field of research should cover the development and application of atomistic modelling techniques to address key questions in biochemistry/pharmacology/toxicology in relation to human or animal pathologies in one of the priority therapeutic areas designated by the School, namely, cancer, neglected/rare diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. The new group’s research activities must focus on one or more of the key challenges in the field and push back the frontiers of atomistic modelling: (i) Modelling the regulation of therapeutic proteins by allosteric mechanisms and post-translational modification, (ii) Simulations providing information and insight at the atomistic level that is difficult to obtain using conventional physical methods in order to optimise potential therapies, (iii) Modelling of binding kinetics to understand pharmacological and toxicological effects of therapeutics, (iv) Drug design, (v) Visualisation and integration of bioinformatic and biomolecular data, (vi) Modelling of membrane permeation to optimise pharmacokinetics, (vii) Provide a better understanding of the relationship between the amino acid sequence and function of proteins in biochemical processes that are essential for life and health, (viii) Atomistic modelling of the interactome to understand the complex biological pathways involved in disease states in order to discover key targets for therapeutic intervention, (ix) Develop methods to simulate the pharmacological effects of therapeutics starting from atomistic level information from interaction partners.
REQUIREMENTS: PhD degree or equivalent and cutting-edge postdoctoral experience. Proven ability to obtain extramural financial support. Experience of leading a research group, in teaching and developing courses. Publication in leading scientific journals.
START DATE: 01.08.2018, or as agreed.
