This project will investigate the role of pockmarks in lakes as element of the hydrological, chemical and sedimentological system. Pockmarks are common morphological features on the floor of oceans and lakes created by the focused upwards migration of fluids through the unconsolidated sediment column. While marine pockmarks have been recognized as important component of the ocean system, little is still known about formation processes, activity through time, and involved type of fluid (water and/or gas) in the case of lacustrine pockmarks.
In peri-alpine Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Thun, presently active pockmarks will be monitored with the aim to quantify groundwater discharge, and dormant structures will be investigated by sediment coring for reconstructing phases of past activity and reasons for formation. Field and laboratory work are thus strong components of this project.
The PhD position is based at the Centre for Hydrogeology and Geothermics (CHYN) at the University of Neuchâtel under the supervision of Dr. Stefanie Wirth. The CHYN offers a stimulating research environment with about 50 collaborators. The team will be complemented with a postdoc at a later stage of the project. In addition, important collaborations exist with the water research institute Eawag (Dr. Damien Bouffard) and with further geological institutes in Switzerland. The PhD candidate will therefore profit from the experience of diverse experts and from an important national and international network of collaborations.
Successful candidates hold a MSc degree in geosciences with specialization in sedimentology, (bio)geochemistry, hydrogeology, limnogeology, marine geology or related fields. Motivation and curiosity for developing new sampling and analysis strategies, for working in an interdisciplinary team, as well as experience in field and laboratory work are important. Existing knowledge about the geology and tectonics of the alpine foreland is an advantage. A high level in English is required, French and/or German is a plus.
The position is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF for a duration of 4 years. The anticipated starting date is April 2018 or upon agreement.
