Assistant professors in experimental quantum matter and optics, tenure track
The Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) is searching for two new faculty members in its section experimental quantum matter and optics, with an emphasis on electronic properties. Candidates should develop their own research program, connecting to and expanding on existing research at LION, which ranges from (engineered) quantum materials to quantum optics and photon-matter interactions, and from physics of energy to the interface of physics and chemistry. Candidates can benefit from our existing infrastructure which include extensive thin film preparation, nanolithography (including EBPG and FIB), magnetotransport measurement facilities below 1 K, as well as microscopy techniques such as low-temperature STM, LEEM, AFM, break junctions, and various single molecule fluorescence techniques. In exceptional cases, appointments at associate or full professor level may be considered.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science, organised in eight institutes, ranges from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The teaching programmes comprise eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. It is located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together. The Faculty is located in the beautiful town of Leiden (by train: 20 min to the airport, 30 min to Amsterdam, 4 hours to Paris). Leiden has a large historic center and a lively restaurant scene.
We offer a tenure track that upon successful performance will lead to promotion to a tenured position as associate professor and upon continued growth in that performance to promotion to a full professor position. A criterion for tenure is a reasonable proficiency in the Dutch language and we actively support learning of Dutch through departmentally funded courses. A special mentoring program is offered with fellow Tenure Trackers in a peer group as well as with senior staff members in the department.

We are embedded in the Leiden Institute of Physics, with its long-standing tradition of excellence in physics research. Apart from the above-mentioned state-of-the-art preparation and measurement facilities, low-vibration space will be available in our new ultramicroscopy hall, and LION experimental groups are (at no costs) supported by excellent mechanical and electronic workshops. We foster an international and collaborative atmosphere and have close ties to especially the TU Delft, through our joint Casimir Research School, as well as to the University of Amsterdam, SRON, and many institutes abroad.
Terms and conditions
We offer a full-time, 6 year term position, with the possibility of a tenure position based on performance. Salary range from €3,637 to €4,660 gross per month (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In exceptional cases, candidates at the associate or full professor level will be taken into consideration.
