In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture of the KU Leuven, there is a part-time vacancy (70%) for senior academic staff (ZAP) available in the domain “Architecture Design and Visual Literacy, developed in a provocative praxis” for the section Architecture & Design on the Sint-Lucas Brussels and Ghent Campus. You will be part of a university that is systematically highly ranked for research and education quality by independent accreditation committees. The structure of KU Leuven combines faculties and research departments in a multi-campus model. The Faculty of Architecture consists of the academic architecture programmes (interior architecture, architecture, spatial design and urban planning and the educational master in design sciences) on the Sint Lucas Brussels-Ghent campus. The faculty is responsible for the organisation of educational activities (www.arch.kuleuven.be). The Faculty is driven by a carefully curated diversity of design practices and is known for its forward-looking education that cultivates a freedom of exploration and experimentation (www.architectuur.kuleuven.be). There are currently about 2200 students, of which around 300 are international students. The Department of Architecture is responsible for the research in architecture, interior architecture, urbanism and spatial planning at the Faculty of Architecture (campus Sint Lucas Brussels-Ghent) and the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (Leuven campus). The department is an international expertise centre in these domains and the research is led by numerous professors and research groups with around 150 (international) PhD students (www.architecture.kuleuven.be). Both teaching and research are carried out across the locations in Brussels and Ghent by a corps of about 300 people.
Experience in academic teaching isrecommended, and is assessed by a list of courses taught, an educational planfor future courses at the faculty, and/or a test lecture on a predeterminedtopic.
Uponrecruitment, you must have sufficient knowledge of Dutch to be able to take onteaching assignments within the LAB-O curriculum (Bachelors of Architecture andInterior Architecture). You must therefore master Dutch as the language ofinstruction at CEFR level C1. You must thereforemaster Dutch as the language of instruction at CEFR level C1.
We are looking for a candidate with demonstrable expertise in design literacy, more specifically in the visual literacy that is central to the hybrid practice of visual and architectural thinking. This expertise is expressed in :
This praxis is situated at the intersection of (interior) architecture, performance and visual art and has a provocative dimension. Provocative here refers to the proactive questioning of architecture in the light of current and future challenges. The provocative/proactive dimension is expressed in the ability to use visual thinking and acting to critically question both spatial and societal concepts and to generate designerly responses to this.
The candidate's track record shows a provocative/proactive praxis that, as an investigative practice, has the potential to be integrated within the academic context or is already partly or entirely situated within this context. Particular attention is requested for the design of innovative learning environments for enhancing visual literacy in research-based design education.
