The Chair for Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems (PLUS) at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development and the Chair of Transport Planning (IVT-VP) of ETH Zurich are looking for two doctoral candidates who will investigate how to measure and plan cities to promote the inclusion of differences.
The PhD students will be part of the interdisciplinary Sinergia project DiffUrb (“Difference-Oriented Urban Planning) funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which investigates the concepts and practices adopted by cities to deal with pluralism, and aims at developing new approaches to planning that are oriented towards inclusiveness. One of the students, closely working with the IVT-TP group (www.ivt.ethz.ch/vpl), will focus on the assessment of differences in individual and social configurations as well as spatio-temporal behaviours using stated choice surveys. The other student, closely working with the IRL-PLUS group (www.plus.ethz.ch), will focus on measuring the differences in affective and cognitive processes of residents when experiencing historical and current urban places using experimental approaches in virtual environments supported by surveys. The studies will be conducted in four urban centres across Europe, including Geneva, Brussels, Turin and Hamburg. The PhD students will be based in the IRL-PLUS group (Prof. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey) and be co-supervised by Prof. Kay Axhausen (IVT-TP).
We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a master's degree in landscape or transport planning, environmental sciences, geography, economics or a related discipline. The ideal candidates have experience with spatial modelling, GIS and/or choice modelling. The applicants should be proficient in one or several programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, Matlab, R, Java). Furthermore, the applicants should have a good command of English (both written and spoken) and should be willing to communicate with and work in an interdisciplinary team.
We look forward to receiving your application. Please submit your cover letter, CV, testimonials and names and contacts of two referees until August 5th, 2021 online (use the “Apply now” button below) with attention to: ETH Zurich, Mrs. Corina Niescher, Human Resources, CH-8093 Zürich.
